Fleming: First Step in Creating Antibiotics

Introduction

Penicillin was discovered by Fleming in 1928. This discovery occurred under unconventional conditions, one might even say that such conditions occurred unexpectedly and surprisingly.

Important informations

In 1940, his discovery was further studied by two researchers: Howard Florey and Ernst Chain. From them, penicillin was used for therapeutic purposes.

Through the use of penicillin, a new phase of medicine began: the antibiotic phase.

Antibiotics are potent weapons against infections caused by bacteria that invade our bodies, which cause diseases such as tuberculosis, meningitis, pneumonia, among many others that were lethal before their discovery.

Unlike in the past, when its production was performed only by fungi and bacteria, today, man is already capable of producing synthetic antibiotics.

Use

Antibiotics are commonly used to treat bacterial infections. However, it should only be used on medical advice, because if used indiscriminately, instead of fighting bacteria, it will make them more resistant and thus no longer effective against them.

The antibiotic can act as a bactericide when its action causes the elimination of bacteria or even bacteriostatic when it stops its proliferation.
